Fussy Friday: PBK Copy Cat Valentine Chair Backer (No Sew)
Who hasn’t fallen in love with Pottery Barn Kids Valentine chair backers? The past few years, Annie and I have been head over heels with the adorbale letter holders.
This year, Pottery Barn Kids has gone with an owl theme for their Valentine backers and as much as I {heart} the little birds, I am still crushing on chair backers from Pottery Barn Valentine past.
In a rare move for me, I went fussy this week and went ahead and made my own. To my delight, I think they turned out just as cute (and much cheaper) than PBK’s. Here’s how to do it:
What you need:
3 pieces of 12X18 Stiff Felt
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Pinking Sheers
Ruler or scoring tool
Velcro buttons
Embellishments of your choice: ribbon, buttons, lettering, etc.
Two pieces of 81/2X11 plain paper to make your pattern
1. Fold one of piece of white paper in half to create the top envelope portion of your seat backer.
2. Unfold paper and fold in top two corner to create an even perfect triangle.
3. Tape your second piece of paper to your triangle folded paper leaving 3/4 of an inch between the triangle and the second paper. See photo 3 & 4. This will make it easy for your chair backer to fold easily.
4. Tape pattern onto a 12X18 stiff felt sheet. Using pinking sheers, cut felt out according to pattern. Place cut-out felt aside.
5. Tape third sheet of plain paper onto a second 12X18 stiff felt sheet. Cut felt out using the white paper as your guide or pattern. This felt piece will be the front section of your Valentine chair backer.
6. Using a ruler, lightly mark where you will need to score your felt for the fold.
7. Score your felt 3/4 in from bottom of triangle to create your Valentine chair backer’s envelope fold.
8. Take second piece of cut stiff felt (the 8.5X11 square) and cut a half circle. This step is not necessary, but does make it easier for little hands to put Valentines in each other’s envelopes.
9. Gather embellishments of your choice and decorate.
10. Hot glue the sides of your two cut-out felt sheets together. Near the top of your chair backer hot glue ribbon of your choice in between the two felt sheets. See photo.
11. Hot glue velcro buttons onto chair backer to keep envelope closed.

Hi. These are perfect…just what I was looking for! Thank you so much for sharing. I have all the project supplies except the most important…the felt. Where did you find the larger size, stiff felt? Thanks!
Hi Natalie,
Thank you for the comment! I purchased the stiff felt at my local Micheal’s Craft. You would also be able to find it at a JoAnn fabric store. I believe each sheet was 89 cents (but I am not positive).
Below are the links to Joann and Michael websites, as well as a link for a 40% off coupon for Michaels.
Have a fabulous weekend,

I keep coming back to these…if you don’t mind, I’d love to share your post on tangarang. you can e-mail me at kira@tangarang.com p.s. You rock!
I love your site and this idea. If you don’t mind I just shared it on Caddywumpus.
Hey, I made these a couple years ago, but yours are much cuter. I made them over again. I had such a hard time punching holes for the ribbon. What did you use and where did you get it? Did you have the same problem?
Thanks for the comment, Amy.
You are so ahead of the game! I love that you made these a couple years back!!!
I used Fiskar’s 1/4″ rectangle shaped hole punch. I bought mine at Michael’s. I know they sell them at JoAnn’s, as well as most scrapbook places. But you can buy one online on Amazon for 3.49!
Here is the link:

I liked this hole punch because of the cushy (sp?) handle and the large rectangle shape made it easy to thread the ribbon. I hope this helps!
Thanks again for the comment! Happy Valentines!!!!
Loralee
P.S. Another quick tip. I also used the pre-cut felt hearts that you can buy for a dollar in a bag at Michaels. They are located right by the felt. I liked them because I didn’t have to cut out a bunch of hearts perfectly.

I am just getting around to looking at your directions for this Valentine’s Day. I don’t understand how they attach to a chair. Also a comment from Amy on 2/6/2009 mentions punching holes but I don’t see that in the instructions. Help! Thanks.
Wow! What a great idea! I have always loved the Pottery Barn versions. This would be great for my kids. Thanks!
Dear Pauline,
Thank you so much for your comment. I apologize it has taken so long for me to reply. Somehow your comment got lost in the jumble of my blog world.
How the backers attach to the chair is found in step 10.
10. Hot glue the sides of your two cut-out felt sheets together. Near the top of your chair backer hot glue ribbon of your choice in between the two felt sheets. See photo.
What you do is glue the ribbon to both sides of your backer and then tie the ribbons in a bow around the sides of your chair. I hope that makes sense. Please email me again if you need help.
As far as punching holes, that was just for decorating your chair backer. I punched holes around my backer to lace my ribbon through for decoration. It is unnecessary, but a fun option.
These are adorable–thank you for sharing this! I am making two for my children, but had a question for you: what letters did you use? I bought a package of sticky felt letters, but they aren’t as cute as yours.
I’m also concerned they won’t stick to the felt. Any tips you can give are appreciated. And thanks again, this was exactly the type of thing I was looking for!

these are so cute!
I have a blog for Nursing Home Activity Directors, I share ideas I find on the web for their Activity Programs. Would it be ok with you if I shared this idea linking to you? I think these be a great craft project and would look great behind wheelchairs or attached to walkers for Valentine’s Day.
Hi Carolyn,
Thank you so much for the comment! I used a little hot glue to keep those letters sticking permanently. Feel free to send us a photo of the your finished project at nofussfabulous@gmail.com
Thanks again!
Loralee
Great idea and I love that it is quick and no-sew! I put a link on my blog! thanks!
Super cute, thank you so much. Can I ask what the 3rd sheet of felt is for. I made one last night and I only used 2 sheets, I couldn’t figure out what the 3rd one was for.
